Public breast milk bank

Héma-Québec's Public Breast Milk Bank provides pasteurized human milk to premature infants up to 32 weeks of age who require medical care and whose mothers are unable to breastfeed.

An indispensable resource for the Quebec healthcare system

More than 400 premature babies have benefited since 2014

The mission of the public breast milk bank

Every year, over 400 babies are born prematurely in Quebec, and 5-6% of them contract a serious intestinal disease called necrotizing enterocolitis, which is associated with a high mortality rate. The use of banked breast milk reduces the risk of premature babies developing this disease by up to a factor of three!

Héma-Québec meets the breast milk needs of all hospitals offering specialized neonatal care in the province. The creation in 2014 of this now indispensable resource for the Quebec healthcare system would not have been possible without the Héma-Québec Foundation, which provided financial support for the feasibility study ($68,000), followed by the launch of the Public Breast Milk Bank ($500,000).
