La Fondation / New state-of-the-art equipment for Quebec eye banks
A visionary partnership between Héma-Québec and Québbec Eye Banks
Nearly 2x more corneal transplants possible!
These new specular microscopes increase the ability to visualize and evaluate corneas prior to transplantation, and thus provide more information to eye bank teams. Historically, around 11% of corneas are rejected for transplantation due to the presence of endothelial abnormalities. With the old microscopes, it was impossible to see all areas of the cornea and distinguish a simple hole from a real anomaly. In case of doubt, the corneas were rejected. It is estimated that the new generation of specular microscopes will halve the number of rejections due to endothelial anomalies.
Lions Clubs International, the Laval Lions Club, the Terrebonne Lions Club and the Fondation des Clubs Lions financed 80% of the amount. The remaining 20% was financed by the Fondation de l’Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont, the Fondation du CHU de Québec and the Fondation Héma-Québec.
Héma-Québec’s Public Breast Milk Bank provides pasteurized human milk to premature infants up to 32 weeks of age who require medical care and whose mothers are unable to breastfeed.
Quebec’s two eye banks, at Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital and the CHU de Québec’s Centre universitaire en ophtalmologie, now each have a new specular microscope, thanks to funding from the Héma-Québec Foundation!
