Charlie's story

It all began in late December 2014.

“Your donations saved my life.”

At the time of year when magic usually happens.

Annie notices that her five-year-old daughter Charlie is not doing well at all. She has a fever, and a bruise has appeared on her body. When she suddenly starts having convulsions and the tips of her little fingers turn black, she is rushed to hospital.

Then a word you’d never want to hear rings out: leukemia.

Charlie is indeed suspected of suffering from this terrible disease. His oxygen, hemoglobin, red blood cell and platelet saturation values are dangerously low. And the worst is yet to come… His immune system is so severely damaged that doctors have little hope.

Annie sits helplessly beside Charlie’s hospital bed. Every minute seems like an eternity, every smile Charlie gives her a reminder of the fragility of life. But we don’t yet know if she has leukemia. Fear, anxiety and uncertainty will mark these interminable days for Charlie’s family.

During this period in 2014, Charlie had to receive several blood transfusions.

After only a week and several transfusions, Charlie had regained sufficient strength to undergo a lumbar puncture. At that time, no trace of leukemia had been detected. Charlie had finally been allowed to go home with his parents and little sister. The family believed that this nightmare was behind them.

A month later, at a follow-up appointment, the verdict was in: she had been diagnosed with leukemia. Luckily, Charlie had had time to regain the strength he needed from the transfusions to begin his treatments.

Charlie now gives back to the next!

Today, Charlie is cured. She is fortunate to have a normal life and a happy, healthy childhood.

Charlie volunteers to organize blood drives at his school to help Héma-Québec continue to collect blood. Her mother, deeply grateful to see her daughter take a bite out of life, has so far made 31 blood donations. And she won’t be stopping anytime soon!

Charlie and her family thank you for your continued generosity and support, so that other children like her can realize their dreams.
